Guatemala has created many indigenous artist who trend Pre-Columbian traditions. Other artists have reflected Guatemala's colonial and post-colonial history, that have also been combined with the traditional "primitiveness" attribute with European, North American, and other traditions.
Music:
The music of Guatemala uses a number of different styles and expressions. Guatemalan music has empowered social changes with music scenes, for example, Nueva canción, which mixes together history, present day issues, and the political values and struggles of people. Many composers from Renaissance, baroque, classical, contemporary, and romantic music styles have all been contributed into Guatemalan music. The Maya have also had a intense musical practice. The marimba is the national instrument of Guatemala, since it has been used to develop a large variety of very sensual pieces that have been popular for more than a century!
Food:
Much of the food in Guatemala has been inspired from the Maya, and usually include corn, beans, and chilies, as main ingredients. There is also food that is eaten during a certain day of the week. For instance, it is common to eat Peaches on Thursday. Certain dishes are also used during special occasions, like tamales, which are very common around Christmas time.
